What is a Driver CPC Course?

Are you someone who wants to become a professional coach, lorry or bus driver? If you are, then you will need to have the Certificate of Professional Qualification (CPC). To obtain this, you need to complete a driver CPC course.

What is the CPC qualification?

The CPC qualification aims to make sure that there is a uniform approach to driver and road safety throughout Europe and the UK. This means all new bus and lorry drivers have to undertake CPC training. Holding the CPC qualification is a legal requirement for driving large vehicles.

What does a CPC course involve?

Initial CPC

To obtain the CPC qualification, you need to complete a driver CPC course. You can read the syllabus on the GOV.UK website. It lists what topics courses should cover. Whether it be HGV training or any other kind of training, all new drivers will, on successful completion, receive the CPC qualification. To retain the qualification, drivers have to complete at least 35 hours of training every five years.

For a new driver, obtaining CPC certification involves completing four modules. They are a mixture of theory and practical tests.

  • Module 1 – Multiple choice and hazard perception tests
  • Module 2 – Case Studies
  • Module 3 – Driving Test
  • Module 4 – CPC Practical Demonstration Test

You don’t have to complete all of the modules at the same time. It’s only when you finish them all that you receive your CPC qualification. The qualification remains valid as long as you complete the required amount of training every five years.

Periodic CPC

Once your initial CPC is obtained you then need to stay abreast of your 35 hours training every 5 years to maintain your Access to your DQC Card which is your permit to allowing you to driver for hire or reward – without this you will not be driving.

Benefits of a CPC Course

Taking a CPC course has benefits for both drivers and employers. They include:

  • Improved driver safety
  • Improves employment opportunities
  • Environmental and Economic Benefits
  • Increase driver awareness and health

The main benefit is knowing that you’re not breaking the law when you drive professionally.

In summary

To drive lorries or buses for a living, you will need to hold the CPC qualification and keep your DQC card up to date with regular training. By doing the course and gaining your uploads to your DQC card, it benefits both you as a driver and your employer. The benefits can vary, but ultimately the training will result in improving both driver and road safety. Despite the benefits, having the CPC qualification is a legal requirement for both driver and transport compliance.
