There has been a paradigm shift in the hospitality management industry.  Today’s mentors are not yesterday’s  be wise old men. Management mentoring is no longer confined to the old lion teaching the new lion the tricks of the trade.

Higher education is necessary. Unfortunately, you need those letters after your name. Four years in school can cut 15 years off your career development plan. But, don’t expect the restaurant or hotel industry to run the way you were taught in school.

It’s not about organization. It’s about saving time, understanding software, and employee development.

It’s not about your skills. It is about your ability to bring out the best in your employees, reducing employee turnover by meeting their needs and coaching them.

It is not even about the food and how to run a kitchen. Hire a good chef and then leave that job in their capable hands.

It is a different horizon. We have a younger work force with one set of values and beliefs, serving a much older consumer base with an entirely different set of values and beliefs.

In the work place, age and position are no longer a requirement to be a manager. Young people manage older people. There is a new generation of coaching for business managers, and some are barely out of college. 

What Do They These New Managers Have?

The new mangers have a more social outlook on their jobs, workplace environment, and social interaction. The old manager was a leader. The younger manager is apt to be yesterday’s computer programmer. This new focus on social intelligence over organization is opening up the world for many, but it is making it difficult for older managers.

The new generation of mentors and protégés in more concerned with the free flow of information than sitting at the feet their own personal Socrates. They have a hive mind.

The old ‘my good enough is good enough’,  doesn’t wash in the new hospitality industry.

This generation of hospitality managers have been exposed to a new way of doing things and an unprecedented access to information. In the past, the manager led the relationship between manager and staff member. Now, it is just as much the staff members responsibility to take responsibility for daily tasks and their own ‘output’, and to work with the manager to take their job posting in a mutually beneficial direction. Management has become less of a leader-student relationship and more of a partnership. 

Management – Coaching

At its root, management should have always been this way. A manager is someone with knowledge and experience in a particular field or area of study who wishes to share that knowledge and experience with others. The ‘on the floor’ employee s someone who understands the job. They have the know how, the skills, to do a good job.  

Hospitality Management in an Internet World

Technology’s impact on the way business is conducted changed the old management style. Suddenly, it was not uncommon to see young people in their twenties learning management skills online and mastering skills that use to be limited to established people in their fifties.

You may be the manager. That doesn’t mean that you are the master of the POS system. It doesn’t mean that you need to make the decisions regarding how to fix the dishwasher. Maybe there is someone on your staff that can make the dishwasher ‘purr’ and work like it is charmed.

You may be the manager, but maybe there is someone on staff who is better at coaching people, working out schedules, and can get people to come in when they are scheduled to come in.

This new generation of skilled workers wants to learn from their managers as much as they want to earn a paycheck. They want to use their skills. They want to develop their careers. You may only see a head waitress. But that head waitress may have plans to be in management in five years, or even have her own coaching for restaurant owners.

In this new world of management should be viewed more as coaching and mentoring. It is about knowledge and ability rather than age, education, or job definition. People do not need to meet the status quo. They just need to be successful.
